The Royal Burgh

St Andrews University The town was first inhabited over 8000 years ago by hunter gatherers who left behind fascinating glimpses into their lives. Archaeological sites in the area date back to theBronze Age. The town has played an important role in the history of Scotland, particularly around the middle ages when it became a religious centre of major significance. True settlement in the town actually began in earnest though around the 6th century A.D.

Royalty has always been intertwined with this ancient town and Mary Queen of Scots made several visits during her reign. During the Renaissance period, the town became an intellectual centre with educational and business links to Paris and numerous continental university towns.

Violent power struggles between religious factions during the Reformation caused a rapid decline in the importance of the town, culminating in the Union of Scotland and England in 1707. History has been written and made in this area, battles fought and lives changed, yet through it all the natural beauty of the area ensured that it would forever reign as a town of great importance.
